The fashion to mimic Apple’s iPad designs was always strong at Samsung. There are plenty of reasons why Samsung follows Apple’s development and design ideas way too close for comfort, if you ask Apple lawyers. This time, Apple’s iPad 3 may become a template for Samsung developing a slate with a screen of whopping pixel count for a 11.6? panel: 2560×1600.
“Retina”-class displays instigated by Apple’s research were demoed by several major display manufacturers on technology shows since this summer. They were presented in different sizes, form-factors, and LCD techologies by Toshiba, Sharp, LG Display, and Samsung.
This time Samsung is rumored to move ever closer to its target. The mysterious netbook-sized tablet will most probably sport a 11.6? 2560×1600 display (there are also 10.1? 1920×1200 specimens demoed, but there’s no rumors tying these to any future product just yet). The technology to drive such a display could be IGZO TFT LCD by Sharp, so such a display won’t be too sluggish and ghosting when repainting such a stupendous number of pixels.
It also could be a PenTile type of display for gaining a better screen transparency and liminence on a very dense grid of pixels. With a PenTile type panel, the pixel count numbers may differ depending on who counts, but it’s not substantial for anything in the ongoing discussion of Samsung rumors.
This Samsung super-slate will be driven by Samsung Exynos 5250 SoC, a 2 GHz dual-core ARM Cortex A15 chip on 32-nm High K Metal Gate technology. The chip is claimed to double the performance of existing ARM Cortex A9 dual-cores running at 1.5 GHz. It’s modded prototype might be an obvious basis for designing iPad 3's A6 processor.
So again, Samsung continues to play very close to Apple. Next year will show what this cat and mouse game boils down to.
