Adding social elements makes apps perform better – RIM

Word of mouth is a powerful thing. Recommendations from friends and colleagues usually sway opinions and convince people to try the latest restaurant, check out the latest film and influence purchase decisions on gadgets and applications. That’s the reason why word of mouth is being leveraged by RIM to help developers to get their apps downloaded more. RIM has said that apps that use their BBM Social Platform typically perform better than apps without during one of our sessions with the Canadian company during BlackBerry Devcon Asia. An app called Caro for example, enjoyed 4 million downloads in less than 3 months, thanks to sharing via BBM. Additionally, RIM has said that BBM Social enabled apps typically perform 15 times better than apps without it which is great news for developers, since it never hurts to have your apps absolutely everywhere.

In a world where apps are a dime a dozen, developers face an uphill battle when it comes to getting noticed. The Android marketplace for example, has thousands of apps on tap which makes it hard for a single application to stand out which also makes it hard for developers to earn money. Well, George Staikos, VP Web Technologies said during today’s keynote at the BlackBerry DevCon Asia that developers make more money with BlackBerry, and enjoy more downloads and are discovered more often. George says that 5 months after opening up their BBM Social Platform API to developers, the first 325 apps that used the API has enjoyed 60 million downloads, with more happening every day. And according to Evans Data Application Distribution survey, developers selling apps through BlackBerry App World made significantly more money than developers of other app stores, with 13% of BlackBerry developers make over $100,000 from App World apps. Other stats impressive stats include ?165 million BlackBerries sold, 50 million BBM users, 1 billion downloads in Appworld.

The Blackberry Market isn’t shrinking – 4 myths about the brand that isn’t true

Like any self-respecting tech outfit, we follow technology sites and blogs from the US religiously. As a result, we went into the BlackBerry Developer Conference in Singapore with the mindset that RIM was a company floundering and was in the precipice of losing relevance. But boy, were we wrong. Dead wrong. While BlackBerry may not be doing that well in the US, it seems that the Canadian company was flourishing in Asia, and has managed to grab a large share of the market in several countries which include Thailand and Indonesia. So why all the reports of the doom and gloom?
“To be blunt, it’s lazy reporting,” says Alec Saunders, VP of Developer Relations and Ecosystems Development for RIM. “If you sit down and looked carefully at RIM’s business, you can’t walk away with notion that the company is going nowhere. This is a company that grew its subscriber base from 50 million to 70 million – that’s a 44% growth rate in one year.” He adds, “We got no debt on the books and the business is profitable with no debt – it’s not in trouble. It just boggles my mind.”
Alec also compiled a couple of myths that’s usually associated with the brand and we’ve managed to include them all below. The key message that we felt RIM wanted to impart to the press during the whole conference was that the company may not be doing well in the US, but it’s doing a killing in Asia and in other, larger markets. Let’s just hope the love spreads everywhere, eh?

This is my second Blackberry 9630 purchased from Amazon within the past 60 days. The first one ordered from a vendor in California, used less than one month. Customer service & phone was outstanding. Phone was like new. I accidentally spilled cola on it causing me to lose my sim card & the phone. Needless to say, I was sick!! Ordered another one from another vendor. It was an "open box" product. The phone kept rebooting itself, now its dead. I'm in the process of returning it for a refund, delayed due to my recent hospitalization this past week. The Blackberry 9630 is a good phone.

As five months passed since I got this phone, I must admit I like it much more than I did before. True, I still have some issues with it, but these issues are just too minor comparing to lots of useful features that this device delivers. Previously I wrote that it deleted all my contacts from the phone book, and last week it just happened again but I noticed that it happened after I added an another gmail account to the phone. So after I gooogled a bit I found out that gmail actually will sync your contacts with your gmail account but for some unknown reason remove them from the phone book. So basically all you have to do is to download google sync on your phone and transfer contacts back to the phone book. So I tend to believe that this issue has more to do with google gmail setup rather than the phone itself. Also the issue with the Citibank mobile site have resolved mysteriously, and now I am able to do banking through the native browser (which still sucks by the way in many aspects) I am also looking forward to the release of OS 6.0 which should include webkit browser with flash support and other new and exciting features. So I must say that ever since I got this phone it never crashed or restarted on me, not even a single time. So I must increase the rating of the phone to 4 stars as it's been a really great tool which I certainly can rely on in terms of usability and trust.

My Blackberry just arrived in the mail 3 days before the expected delivery date! I got free shipping for something that would have arrived at the same time if I selected one day shipping (I ordered on Friday and it came on the next Monday) I ordered it from Just Cellular and did a lot of research on them before purchasing a phone. I read before that some phones stopped working after a given amount of time, and hopefully mine does not follow the trend and I ordered it from a different company than those phones. It came with just the phone, battery and wall charger. The packing was left to be desired considering the contents were just bouncing around in the box. But everything checked out ok. I will state right in the beginning my view that Blackberries continue to be the leaders when it comes to security, data efficiency, reliability and and practicality. My company-issued Blackberry does not do games very well and I'm not using it to play movies (I prefer the 73" screen in the living room for that) but it's amazingly good when it comes to getting my email and quickly composing new messages or replying to the incoming. Also great at integrating the enterprise email with any Web email services I'm using, Bluetooth-paired devices and the phone features be they 4G or Wi-Fi.

Current Bold users should be happy and almost certainly happier with the 9900 because this is very much the 'old' Bold only sleeker, faster or, in other words... bolder. When it comes to new users, it's a crowded marketplace out there. Those who prefer great physical keyboards may want to look into this Bold because you could hardly find a better 'phone' keyboard anywhere and that includes other Blackberries. I am currently a Torch user but I've been given the opportunity to try out a couple of the newer models: this new Bold and the new Torch 9810. I will confess that I personally prefer the new Torch to the new Bold because I prefer a slightly larger screen but, in fairness, few phones come close to the new Bold when the factors considered are elegance, the quality of the build and, naturally, the keyboard.

First, the good things about the 9900 Bold:

- IT'S STILL A BLACKBERRY - This is important to the many BB users who want their Blackberry to change only slightly from one generation to another, at least as far as the physical form and the user interface is concerned. While Blackberries evolved from the little 'wheel' to the track ball to the current touch-sensitive pad to touch screens, they are still recognizable and I bet that if a time traveler from, let's say, 2002, popped up in 2011, he/she should be able to use the 9900 in no time. All buttons are at the familiar locations and, at least when comparing it with the previous generation, the 9900 responds very much in the same way with 'touch' added if needed but never mandatory to accomplish anything. I find myself using a combination of touch, buttons and sometimes to track pad to operate it.

- IT'S SMALLER, LIGHTER - While the screen appears to be (very slightly) larger on the 9900, its bulk is significantly reduced. The 9900 is thinner and it appears to weigh less than its predecessor. Not everyone may appreciate this in the beginning and I was one of those but I got used with the lighter device quickly and I would consider it an improvement now.

- IMPROVED PICTURE QUALITY - Very much on par with what's current 'best in the business', the picture on the 9900 is significantly better as far as brightness and resolution. I would not use the Bold to watch movies or read books with the Kindle app but this is because I don't use Blackberries that way. I could if I wanted to. To me Blackberries are expected to do: email, voice, enterprise integration. Everything else is 'extras' - my employer wouldn't like to see me watch movies, play games or update my Facebook wall on the company 'phone'.

- EXTRAS - Of course, you get cameras with geolocation which I'm not likely to use a lot but it's good to know it's there, you can get video for free or subscribe to some pay services, have the ability to store various media and so on. It's good to have them but I'm not likely to spend much time with the 'extras' except maybe with the Web browser which, by the way, is very good at handling HTML5.

- IMPROVED WEB BROWSER - This is good news. The built-in browser may not be as good as, let's say, Opera but it's coming pretty close and it's a major improvement over what Blackberry used to offer. This one is, of course, touch enabled.

- 4G - Of course. It makes this model (a lot) more expensive than most of the competition.

- Bluetooth, WI-FI - they work great and pairing with a Bluetooth device can be done literally in seconds.

In addition to the above, on the 'the same' or not necessarily 'improvements' category, I noticed no significant change as far as battery life is concerned. Hard to measure it but I would recharge it every couple of days if used for phone/email only and at least daily if a lot of web browsing or video is involved.

On the not-so-good or 'really annoying' side, I really hated the abundance of bloatware - I call it 'crapware' - that seems to have invaded the Blackberry world. There is an abundance of little pre-installed apps and services that, shortly after you click on and go to the trouble of activating them, it turns out that they are 'pay' things, ranging from Pac-Man to TV services, and it's either impossible or very difficult to remove - I didn't have the time to waste so I was able to quickly hide them but... there SO MANY of them. If Research in Motion is listening, they should know that I do NOT love Blackberry more for turning the BB desktop into some apps and services peddling space. Blackberry's app store continues to be difficult to navigate, overpriced and quite unattractive.

When it comes to rating the Bold 9700, within the context of Blackberries, it's probably one of the best (the Torch is still my #1). It's lighter, brighter, sharper, faster and provides more functionality than previous models so it's a five-star.

And, yes. The Blackberry is not an iPhone or an Android. And the reverse happens to be true: iPhones and Androids are not Blackberries. I'm using an Honeycomb tablet for personal entertainment and there is an iPad in our household but what I've been using a Blackberry for 'business' quick, efficient and reliable communications for the past 10+ years.

tem ordered was well-packed and it arrived on time. I am very happy with my Blackberry Curve 9300. I love it. I did not encounter any problems whatsoever. Contacting the site (Worldwide Distributors) was fairly easy. I did not have to talk to a machine. I just wish all sites are just like Worldwide Distributors. I have started recommending it to my friends, especially those who are tied up with 2-year contracts with their service providers and find that those data plans are not exactly what they need.
On a scale of 1-10, I will give Worldwide Distributors an easy 10!!!!

I bought this item some weeks ago and It's been working Good.. Maybe the issue of Activation could be a problem for you, but I Have the solution.
Do the next... Press ##000000 and then press ok, then, where say MOBIL DIRECTORY NUMBER delete the number that appears in there and Write your own number, then press RIM buttom and press Save.. That's it.. Problem Fixed.. I hope it works on your cellphones...

All in all I am VERY satisfied with this phone! I have not found it to be slow at all. In fact in a side by side test, it loads web pages and apps much faster than my daughters iPhone. Also, I have not had any of the syncing issues described in other reviews (although I'm using a PC, not an Apple).

Some have said they don't care for the clickable screen. I REALLY like it! Although my fingers aren't huge they arn't tiny either and the QWERTY keyboard works for me just fine (although I'd definitly recommend landscape mode when typing). I have noticed that the more you use the typing feature the more you get a "feel" for typing on the virtual keyboard.

My only issue with this phone was getting a well built unit. The first phone I bought had some kind of contaminant under the glass of the screen. Phone#2 had a bad mic, Phone#3 had a problem "clicking" on one edge of the screen. I'm on phone#4 currently and I think this one is a winner (knock wood). I will say that Verizon switched out the phone each time, no questions asked and sincerely wanted me to be happy with my purchase.

Minor complaints (not strong enough to deduct a Star):
1. Music data (album name, artist, etc...) should be editable on the device, instead of just on windows before you transfer the song over.
2. The data displayed while a song is playing does not appear to be configurable.
3. Hoping for a 32gb SD card option although 16mb is probably fine.
4. Agree with the previous review re:placement of the sd card. It would have made more sense to put it on the outside somewhere to make it easier to swap out.

Overall, I would highly recommend this phone and would advise that one just be picky to make sure your phone doesn't have any functional issues.

Product Review

Pros: Reception and call quality!, interface, beautiful screen, syncs with Mac, keyboard, terrific sound on media player, decent camera, and intuitive user interface.

Cons: Battery life could be better, can be slow at times with multiple applications open, the Mac syncing software from Blackberry is finicky though it eventually works, no 3G network support :(

Summary: This phone is wonderful. My last two smartphones were Windows Mobile and this Blackberry completely blows them out of the water. The interface is wonderful and the OS is really reliable. I put battery life under cons, though it gets about forty hours with one charge on heavy text, email, internet, and phone usage, so this is really a minor complaint.

All in all I love this device. Compared to my girlfriend's previous gen Blackberry, this little gadget is a beauty and a top performer. Keyboard is about the same, but the 8900 wins in just about every other category: build, reception, screen, interface, camera.

Versus the Bold
I ultimately chose this over the Bold for a few reasons: keyboard, form factor, price tag, and screen. The Bold's edge over the Curve 8900 is its support for 3G, though I find browsing the internet on a phone painful so it had no impact on my decision. I prefer the smaller size of the Curve 8900 too, and it feels like it's built better than the Bold.

Versus the iPhone
I'm a Mac user, though I chose a Blackberry. Why? First of all, I already own an iPod Touch so I'm familiar with the interface of the iPhone and I can tell you how frustrating it is to type on the screen! I wanted the full physical keyboard interface, and with the growing Blackberry app store it is quickly gaining ground on the iPhones flexibility. I find the trackball quick and I make less errors with it than on the touch interface. Of course, the touchscreen has its perks, but I find that I don't miss it here. I also wanted to avoid the iPhone's lackluster battery, and I'm happy I did because the Blackberry easily lasts a full day and the next without a charge. I also know that iPhone's don't get the greatest reception, and this 8900 gets the best reception of any cell phone I've owned (which is probably at about ten total phones over the years).

Conclusion:
This is a great phone. I highly recommend it. I did a lot of research before making this decision and am very happy I settled on the Curve 8900.

This phone works flawlessly. The touch screen is easy to use and not overly sensitive. The browser is great. There are many things BlackBerry does so much better than anyone else such as contact management and instant message management, in my opinion. Push email is awesome. I've had BlackBerries and HTC and BlackBerry wins hands down. I have friends with iPhones and while their phone is dead until they get to a place to recharge it all I have to do is pop the battery out and put a fresh one in and I'm still going. Being able to replace the battery on the fly is very important when I am out hiking or camping. One possible drawback to this particular phone is the OS6. It is excellent in and of itself but my carrier doesn't support it and I was unable to get service books for the browser to work. Check with your carrier to see if the phone is compatible and if the OS is compatible. If not, a quick stop at Crackberry.com gave me the fix for that and now it works perfectly. If you are using an unlocked phone not on the original carrier this website has all the answers.

Finally I got my new device and I can tell that it was all that I was expecting. I bought it from Amazon.com store (not another seller) and when the box arrived the first thing that I checked was the model number and it is RCM72UW, which works with 3G bands 850/1900/2100, so this is AT&T, Rogers, Telus model...not T-Mobile model, so this is good news for me 'cause I use Movistar-Venezuela service. Well, to be honest I can not assure that Amazon.com will always be sending this particular model because they don't make any difference about the 3G compatibility and believe me 'cause I expend a lot of mails to customers service and they couldn't give me this detailed info. I took the risks and bought it anyway. Another info displayed on the box: Blackberry Bold 9780 Smartphone, 1256- Americas (Spanish) QWERTY-Black. Model RCM72UW, Made in Mexico. It comes with OS 6.0.0 Bundle 863. NOTE: Surprisingly it came with a 2GB microSD card already installed even when it wasn't published in the product details. Other info found checking in the options: active 3G bands 1, 2, 5 y 6. Searching in the internet I found that this means that it works with 3G bands 2100/1900/850/800. The box content is: 9780 device with plastic label protection on screen, battery cover, upper front (where it's printed "Blackberry"), camera lens and flash, leather pouch (the simple plane one, without belt clip, the leather looks like artificial type), earphones, battery, 5 feet USB cable (longer than the old one I had), standard wall charger with multiple international adapters (I was expecting ipod-like wall charger with female USB input, but it came with the usual one), Desktop software CD, user manual and some quick guides.

After having a Blackberry phone with a roller ball...going to this one was heaven! The scrolling pad (not sure on the specific name, but it's not a roller ball!) is SO much better than the ball - it doesn't get stuck like the ball did, and it's easy to touch and scroll up, down, side to side, etc..

The keys are pretty easy to use to type - I guess if you were to have bigger fingers it might be a little bit harder, but I have had no issues with it really.

The phone is very resistant to damages, as I've dropped mine a million times and it still barely has any scratches or 'blemishes' :) The screen has even held up really well and there are no marks or scratches on it either, which is amazing, coming from a mom of two who always gets her phone taken away and thrown, tossed, dropped, chewed on, etc., by her kiddos. haha

Overall, a great phone so far, and I've had mine about a year now, if not more. I'm happy with it, as my main concern with my last blackberry, was with the rollerball, and because this one doesn't have that, I've had no big issues with it. It's got Blackberry Instant Messenger which I could not live without!!

the 8520 phone actually works well on at&t! no matter how much you learn the iphone keyboard, a blackberry full physical qwerty still wins, hands down. the spell checker and predictive type on bberry is better vs iphone and with the physical keyboard you misspell a lot less. since you can sync your itunes on here you only "miss" the iphone for its apps which really only work best on wifi. 8520 is lightweight, fairly thin, very light, has nicely spaced keys, and really cool media controls blended into the top of the device. nice use of rubber here on the device too lends some durability to glossy plastic finish. I jammed a 16G nand flash card into it too so i have music, movies etc with me. I bought the unlocked version since i use the 8520 when traveling to US from abroad .... without a full blackberry data package you lose out on things like email and blackberry messenger - but this is my 2nd/travel phone so i dont care too much - I use it when in the US with pay as you go on at&t - i get what i want a phone that works, easy texting, wifi browsing and music/video. iPhone is my main phone abroad but it wont stay that way once renewal time comes. I could easily see 8520 being my main phone but if you want the mobile internet experience (3G) and slightly cooler packaging then go for the 9700, but you pay for it - a lot more. given cost differential I would easily buy 8520 over 8900 ...8520 just feels a tad cooler too vs 8900 still too corporate. yet both are pretty similarly equipped. if you had full blackberry data package with this as your main phone u r probably happy person. i am more than happy with this as 2nd/travel phone. Cool thing about this unlocked version is i can buy pay as you go sim card, slip it in and work no matter where i am. in past my edge (non3G) blackberries actually run things like google apps and internet fairly well. i am sure 9700 with full 3G is better but necessary??
